Drain Cleaning
Do you need to clean a stinky or clogged drain? If you’re visiting this page then you’ve probably already tried the many suggestions online when searching for “ways to unclog a drain”. If you’ve given it your best shot and still have a drain that needs cleaned, 1st America Plumbing, Heating, & Air can clean it.
Bathroom Sink Drains: Soap, toothpaste, and more make their way down the bathroom sink and into the drain. Some clogs can be cleaned by removing the trap (code required) and cleaning it out. For clogs farther down the line, you’ll want to give us a call.
Floor Drains: Laundry rooms, basements, and mechanical rooms are often low traffic areas. Floor drains found in those areas can become home to debris and dirt. Make sure you clean the drain every once and a while to help avoid flooding.
Floor drains may not be tied into the sewer system. They may be area drains. If you’re having an issue with one of these, we can help. These drains are equipped with a trap that should be kept filled with water to prevent odors and sewer gas from escaping. Test drains occasionally to make sure they aren’t clogged and are ready to carry away water and prevent flooding.
Kitchen Drains: Think of everything that you put down your kitchen sink! Grease and fat, soaps, food particles, and more find their way down your kitchen drain. If you don’t occasionally clean the drain then the film and gunk inside the pipes will build up until the drain clogs. A partial clog will cause slow drainage and a full clog will back up the drain. If you have a garbage disposal then avoid large quantities of items, also, items that absorb water such as pasta, potatoes, and rice to help you avoid drain stoppages.
One of our customers found weevils in her mashed potatoes. She dumped the mashed potatoes in the sink and turned on the water to wash it down. And how do you make mashed potatoes? “Just add water!” We had 40 feet of drain line full of mashed potatoes. Not the situation that you want to take place at Thanksgiving!
Toilet Drains: Too much toilet paper is one potential way to clog your toilet drain. Also, “flushable” wipes can potentially cause issues as well. If you have kids, the cause of the clog is only limited to what you have lying around your home. Also, not storing items above the toilet can help avoid problems. Like the customer who had a teenager with amazing timing. As he flushed the toilet he bumped the shelf. An entire stick of deodorant went down the toilet just as it flushed. Which required us to pull the toilet in order to retrieve the item and remove the stoppage.
Unclog Tub and Shower Drains: With the amount of hair, shampoo, and soap that can go down a shower or tub drain, it’s not surprising how often they clog. The best time to get the drain looked at is when it starts to slow. We recommend avoiding liquid cleaners that are caustic or acidic.
