Water softeners are cost-effective over time. They decrease the buildup inside your water pipes. You will also have less wear and tear on your appliances (washer, sink, dishwasher, fridge water and ice dispensers, etc.).
Many people don’t know that there are different ways to soften your water. There are salt-based water softeners, salt free water conditioners and whole house filtration systems.
Salt-Free Conditioner
If you want less maintenance and wastewater, a salt free water conditioner may be what you’re looking for. With a conditioner, you won’t have the silky feeling you get with salt-based water softeners. Some prefer it while others do not.
Salt-Based Softener
Salt-based water softeners remove minerals from the water that comes out of your tap. Soap and shampoo increase lather. A salt-based water softener uses a resin tank to remove magnesium and calcium ions that will typically build up on your faucets, shower, tub, dishes, and inside your pipes. You may know this as a hard water stain or hard water buildup.
Water Softener/Conditioner Maintenance
A water softener requires more maintenance than a conditioner does. A conditioner has a filter that should be replaced every six months. Whenever salt is involved, maintenance becomes a little more difficult and time consuming, adding salt to the system on a consistent basis, but it will never add up to the time it takes to scrub dishes, showers, and faucets that have hard-water stains.
